The Locked Room Library Heist

Mystery, mischief, and mayhem in the most unexpected place

The Locked Room Library Heist

If you thought libraries were quiet, boring places, think again. On an otherwise uneventful Tuesday morning, the Maplewood Public Library became the scene of a crime so puzzling it could have been ripped straight out of a detective novel. Nestled in the heart of its Special Collections room was its crown jewel: a rare, signed first edition of Agatha Christie’s The Murder of Roger Ackroyd. The book, locked in a glass case and guarded by a state-of-the-art alarm system, had been the pride of the library for years. And yet, on that drizzly Tuesday morning, it was gone. Vanished into thin air. What happened next left the town buzzing for weeks.

Chapter 1: A Most Unusual Crime

“It’s gone!” Mrs. Hazelwood’s usually calm voice cracked as it echoed through the high-ceilinged library. A woman of ritual and reliability, her tight bun could’ve doubled as a gavel for her stern demeanor. She fidgeted with her cardigan, eyes darting nervously. Beside her, Jim the maintenance worker—a burly man perpetually battling a coffee stain on his uniform—held a half-eaten bagel, his expression a blend of confusion and sleep deprivation.

Then there was Albert Longworth, bespectacled and flamboyant, with a flair for drama that even Shakespeare would envy. As leader of the Maplewood Mystery Book Club, Albert delighted in turning life into a whodunit. Now, peering through a magnifying glass, he declared, “A locked room mystery in the flesh! The case is sealed. The alarm? Untouched. Yet, the book is gone. Deliciously perplexing!”

Mrs. Hazelwood glared. “This isn’t a game, Albert. That book is worth half a million dollars! Without it, this library…” Her voice broke off, but her meaning was clear.

Albert struck a dramatic pose. “Fear not, Hazelwood. I shall solve this conundrum posthaste.”

Her skeptical snort could’ve extinguished a candle.
